All::Cardiovascular System::Pharmacology::Adrenaline (epinephrine)
Intro
What is the method of action of Adrenaline?
Potent agonist of the α1, α2, β1 and β2 adrenoceptors.
What is the main clinical use of Adrenaline?
- Cardiac arrest
- Anaphylaxis
- Injected locally to stop bleeding
What are the cardiac effects of Adrenaline?
- Vasoconstriction of vessels supplying skin, mucosa and abdominal viscera
- Increasing heart rate, force of contraction and myocardial excitability
- Vasodilatation of vessels supplying the heart and muscles
What are the non-cardiac effects of Adrenaline?
- Bronchodilatation
- Suppression of inflammatory mediator release from mast cells
What is an important drug interaction of Adrenaline?
β-blocker, as adrenaline may induce widespread vasoconstriction, because its α1-mediated vasoconstricting effect is not opposed by β2-mediated vasodilatation.
