a benign autoimmune disorder characterised by follicular keratin plugst, very rarely progresses to systemic lupus erythematosus

What patient groups is Discoid lupus erythematosus most common?

generally seen in younger females

What are the main clinical features of Discoid lupus erythematosus?

  • erythematous, raised rash, sometimes scaly
  • may be photosensitive
  • more common on face, neck, ears and scalp
  • lesions heal with atrophy, scarring (may cause scarring alopecia), and pigmentation

What is the management of Discoid lupus erythematosus?

  • topical steroid cream
  • oral antimalarials may be used second-line e.g. hydroxychloroquine
  • avoid sun exposure
